Default Oil change schedule

We just got a 2012 Road King. I see that the oil change schedule is 5k for engine, 10k for primary and 20k for trans. The schedule for our 2000 Road King was 5, 5 and 5. My question is why is the change frequency so much longer for primary and trans? What changed?

Not exactly. Just tighter tolerances from manufacturing that allow longer runs. Bear in mind, those are miles and it's a good practice to not leave those fluids in more than a couple years; engine oil no longer than a year (6 months even better).

alot of factors to consider, how you ride, climate where you are, I change all three around 3000 miles, but keep checking them in between for moisture or just being dirty.

JMO

But Changing every 5K all holes might inform you of potential problems and you will be able to nip it in the bud before it turns into a bigger issue. The primary and Transmission oil is fairly cheap to change.

Me too. Motor oil mininum run should be around 3000 miles. Primary around 5 to 10000 miles. Tranny can go 20000 easy with a good gl-4 or 5 oil.

I agree 3k is maximum on an air cooled engines. You can see the oil change every time you take it out for a couple hundred mile run....cheap insurance.
