Default Engine Oil or Tansmission Oil

Ive had motorcycles for a while and just yesterday picked up my first Harley... I picked up a 79 ironhead... The bike runs awesome.

My pops was pushing the bike into the driveway when he rolled over a big rock and i hear the bottom of the bike scratching up against the rock... Next thing i know there is oil everywhere... a little wingnut with a rubber compression type of thing fell off and leaked oil.

Could this have been the dreaded oil drain plug that should never be removed??
I dont want to start the bike back up until i replace the missing oil... My Harley owners manual wont arrive until next week and im trying to get this sorted out this weekend.

I dont know if this is engine oil or transmission oil...

Check out the photos... the red arrow points at the wing nut that came off... i put it back and stopped the leaking but does not seem safe...

Any ideas on what i should do?

It is not the dreaded oil oil drain plug...they are only on Twin Cam Big Twins.

The oil tank drain setup on some of these bikes is a hose with one end connected to the bottom of the tank, and the other end below the engine, with a plug in the end of the hose. That is not how your bike was originally configured, but it is over 30 years old so who knows what changes have been made. You need to trace that hose back and see where it comes from.

Nice bike, very nice. But you gotta toss those struts and put some proper shock absorbers on there...

Thanks for your input...

The problem ended up being my primary oil plug that was completely stripped out... The only solid remedy i found was a universal oil drain plug that has a rubber expansion bolt... After i plugged the drain hole I put new primary oil... I also changed the engine oil and took the bike out for its first decent cruise for about 2 hours and did not see a single drop of primary oil...

The temporary fix worked but what can i do about fixing the stripped threads?

Drill it, tap it, and install a double threaded insert. Then use the standard oil plug with a good crush washer.
