Couldn't agree more. people put way to much thought into oil selection...just get the correct weight for the application and change it on schedule...it really that simple

I was told by an Engineer from Mobil 1 that the MOBIL 1 15w-50 oil is more than sufficient to be used in the V twin engine. He did say that the MOBIL 1 V twin oil 20W-50, has a few extra stabilizing additives but wasn't worth double the price, especially if changed every 3-5,000 miles. I was asked not to use his name in the quote.

While traveling around Americe, I needed an oil change real bad (5,000mi's on old oil) so I let a HD dealer do it because I didn't have to schedule an appointment. I always use amsoil and change it around 2500 mi's religiously. The HD dealer doesn't allow the use of Amsoil, so being desperate to get the oil change, I let them put their HD oil in it. The diffrence was night and day. The HD oil was making my bike run hotter than the Amsoil w/ 5000 mi's on it! I can't wait to get that crap out of my engine and put the Amsoil back in. My 2 cents.

Running Spectro Heavy Duty Golden 20w50 semi-synthetic.
Consumption is nil and I drop it every 5k and it looks good enough to go another 3k
Personally, I feel buying a full synthetic and changing it at 2500 miles is a waste of money, but then it is not my money.

How much hotter was it?

I use Mobil 1 20-50w V-Twin and a friend of mine runs Amsoil in his Softtail. After a hot, blistering run through the Hill Country of Texas, we pulled in for a "cool one". I checked my oil temp gauge and it was reading 230 degrees. My buddies showed to be a little over 210 degrees. Figuring a plus or minus 5 degree variability between our gauges, it would appear there is decrease in engine temps. between the two. However, to make an accurate assessment would require going deeper in comparison of engines, tunes, clearance for air passage and various other elements that could otherwise affect oil temperature. With all that being said, I would have to say that their might be some credence towards the belief that Amsoil provides a little cooler transfer of oil distribution however, this is still inconclusive.
Oh by the way, I still run Mobil1 20-50 V-Twin...

If a motor oil is doing its job at removing heat, the more heat the oil removes from the top end of an engine, the hotter the oil will be in the sump.
So ducer02, i think you made the right choice.
And FWIW 230 is not hot at all...280-290 is getting hot.
