What TRANS oil do you use?
#651
My last oil change I went Amsoil 20w50 in all 3 holes and was not particularly happy with the shifting. So I switched to Amsoil severe gear oil 75w 90 in the tranny. Definitely an improvement for me, keep the engine oil in the engine and gear oil in the transmission

ahhh .. but would you be comfortable putting gear oil in your manual transmission truck (or car) when it calls for motor oil?

I`ve seen a few trashed ball bearings in six speed transmissions, maybe they deserve motor oil...

It seems a lot want to use a 75W90 gear lube in the trans, but if you compare say Amsoil 20W50 to it, then the viscosity of the 20w50 MCV motorcycle oil is higher then the gear lube 75W90. at 100 degs C
For that reason I would us Amsoil's 75W110 which is real close to the MCV engine oil or use their heavier gear lube 75W140.
The Spectro trans lube is a 75W140, so for that reason I would use the 140. The Spectro lube up here costs some 3 times the Amsoil gear lubes.
One other thing, even tho Amsoil recommends their MCV 20W50 in the trans, it is only equal to a group III gear lube.
So my bottom line is, I believe a 75W90 gear lube is too light a viscosity for the trans, therefor 75W110 or heavier is the better choice.
If a trans has yellow metals/brass then one wants a GL4 as a GL5 will damage/attack brass/yellow metals.
My 2 cents. Use what makes one happy.

I have been using the severe gear 75w90 for past couple years.
I thought it was fine.
Good shifting and no bits coming out when changed.
What about the shearing of gear oil vs motor oil ? That part I am in sure of.

Ok stopped by my local Harley guy who builds and tunes Harley's all day.
I asked him what he uses in his bike ?
Yep Spectro 6 speed 75w140
So that's what I am going with now !
Who knew I could be so easily swayed to change my made up mind.
I see it has the GL-5 in it I am assuming Harley's don't have soft metals in tranny !

Amsoil
amsoil sever gear makes my transmission shift like butter. Almost 100k on this tranny with no issues and virtually no wear detected. Good stuff.
