50w???
Has anyone heard of running the mobil1 racing 50w oil in the engine and primary's? My uncle has been riding for 40 yrs and this is what he does. Sure it's fine, I was just wondering if anyone else did this?

Lots of people run 20/50 wt oil which is the same weight when hot. I've found using 15/40 wt oil in the primary causes less drag on the clutch plates when cold, so you don't get the bang goin into first ,and in general helps keep the shifting smooth as butter.,,

I looked and couldn't find 50wt Mobli 1 racing oil. But synthetic oils are multi vis oils naturally. I wouldn't worry about cold flow. It would probably spec out to a 20/50 anyways. Also HD Formula Plus is a straight 40wt mineral oil

Just got off the Mobil 1 website. There is no listing for Mobil 1 50, but their Mobil 1 Racing oil is available in 0w-50 and 0W-30. The oil has high levels of zinc. That makes it unsuitable for use with catalytic converter equipped machines. That is the only engine-related caveat stated on their site: "Mobil 1 Racing oils are not recommended for everyday general street use where vehicles use catalytic exhaust converters." Also: "Mobil 1 Racing oils are formulated with anti-wear (Zinc/Phosphorus) chemistries at twice the level of automotive street oils to provide enhanced protection of highly loaded valve train systems found in some race engines. Based on the high level of anti-wear chemistries, Mobil 1 Racing oils are not recommended for street use." Additionally, I would be leery of using them in the primary because of this: "These oils are not recommended for wet clutch applications due to their high level of molybdenum."
I hit the BITOG site to try for some specs. Didn't see the 0w-50, but the 0w-30 is loaded with additives so 0w-50 should work very well in a motorcycle. Except that it costs $15+ a quart!
