Default Oil light not illuminating

Just bought a 1999 Sportster 883. I dont have the owners manual so I am unsure of how the light should behave. Typically an oil light will come on when the key is turned, then a few seconds later go out. My light never comes on.

Should I be concerned?

Thanks for any help.

Disconnect the wire from the oil pressure sending unit, turn on the ignition and touch the end of the wire to ground, if the light comes on, you have a bad sending unit.

If the light does not come on, replace the bulb.

If the light still does not come on, it will be time to get out the voltmeter.

Don`t ride until you have a properly working oil pressure indicator light.
