My ambient air temp gauge has bumped triple digits the last several days in a row on my way to work in the afternoons. Riding 50+ mi at a time at 80+ mph and I've had no oil issues whatsoever using the Lucas. 32-35psi oil pressure at speed 15-18psi at idle hot.

The condition you described isn't an oil problem, it's an oil cooler problem.

Hard to be an oil cooler problem when you don't have an oil cooler.

Default New to Me Bike

Howdy all,

Just traded in my 2011 Roadking for a new to me 2013 Ultra Classic Limited. Used Mobil 1 20-50 in the FLHR and took it to 58K miles, am thinking of moving towards Lucas 20-50 Syn for the FLHTK. I have no idea what oil the prior owner had in it. I am aiming for good longevity on this bike. I am no Iron Butt rider, but I roll across the state in all seasons (cold weather is a concern), I teach MSF classes for the state of Nevada and the local college. I spend a bunch of time riding, not wrenching, and am hoping to continue this trend.

Would it be detrimental to the internals to switch to a Syn at 35K miles? You all have far more experience with this stuff than I do.

Thanks in advance.

Rob in Reno.

Absolutely not ! You can switch between the two and back again for that matter. Your most important concern should, IMHO, be is the "synthetic" oil you've decided to pay a premium price for really synthetic ? Look for "PAO" or "Ester" on the can. These are the synthetics.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at Lucas, but need to spend some time learning the brands better I guess. Mobil 1 seemed to treat my road king well for 58K.

I appreciate the knowledge base here.

Engine oil manufacturers use dyes specifically designed to add tint to lubes that are used in transmissions.
Transmission oils do not turn black like crank or primary lubes do. So tinting the oil is common, tho not all manufactures add the tint.
