oil drain plug location on 85 flht

Where is the drain plug for the oil on a 85 flht. The bike has been sitting for a while and all the oil is down in the crankcase im told and when i turn it over it pukes out the breather. Would like to drain it and refill with fresh.

You probably won`t get much out of the tank, you should go ahead and scavenge the oil out of the crankcases first.

Make sure there is some oil in the tank, there doesn`t need to be much in there, just make sure the tank doesn`t run dry.

If the breather hose is still connected to the carb backing plate, disconnect it and point it down to a drain pan and start the engine.

Once you run the engine for a few minutes you should have the crankcases scavenged, some of it will have returned to the oil tank, and some will be in the drain pan.

Now you can drain the tank and put in fresh oil, but don`t put in the full amount, leave about a quart low, just in case there is still some in the crankcase...take it out for a ride and get it up to operating temp, then check the oil again.

The drain plug is on the bottom of the oil tank, on the right side of the bike.

There's no drain plug in the crankcase, hence Dan's suggested way of clearing it.
