I recently bought a very nice 2001 RK with a factory custom paint set, 1 of 200. 99% of the paint is in perfect condition. However, there are one or two spots where the paint is beginning to flake off along the edge of the saddlebags (see pics). I'd rather not have the lid repainted, unless it's absolutely necessary. Is there any method of filling in the empty spot with some type of color-matched compound that would prevent the flaking from spreading? It doesn't need to appear to be a perfect seamless match, rather it would be hard to detect from several feet away. I just want to prevent further flaking of the paint. I welcome any constructive input on this. Thanks!

 

well, the paint is only as good as the initial prep. so it looks like the base is not up to snuff and stopping the peeling will be a challenge to say the least. the only work around right off is to have it top coated with a clear with activator to make it dry hard. that said, it will require your to scuff the paint lightly with 1000 wet/dry paper, no worries, when the clear is applied, will shine like new.

is it worth doing that or just bite the bullet and redo the thing ground up. the above is a gamble, small parts not so much but that is what i had to do on a new 1977 dodge warlock truck since the crappy factory paint was coming off in quarter size spots. it worked for me till i sold the truck.

 

If you are just wanting a temporary repair, good paint stores can mix your paint code in a touch up bottle. With it being on the edge you will need to knock the flaking edge off with a 360 grit lightly and can paint around a 1/4" on the edge with the touch up paint with the brush, it will be darker but it is what it is. Proper repair would be sand the flaked area, paint the damaged area with base coat and clear coat the whole lid, will still have the original color under the clear and color match isn't going to be that critical on the side section of the lid.
