Another tip, to prevent "tiger striping" on metallic paints, once you go side to side and get the color on, I back the can off a few inches and do an up and down, and a little faster, to spread out the metallic.

Glad this thread is current. I bought a kit with only ColorRite base color and clearcoat. But I'll be removing rust, so I need to go down to metal. Can I use an off the shelf primer? And if so, do I use a lacquer or enamel? Or do I have to use ColorRite's primer? They don't give a clue what type of paint this is and, of course, say that you SHOULD use their primer.

Thanks,
John

I just got a can of primer/sealer from Autozone. It will be lacquer based After you get all the rust off, you can seal it right away with this primer/sealer. If you have any filling to do, also at Autozone or wherever, you can get a small tube of spot putty. You will need to block sand the area smooth, and re-primer to cover the spot putty. Make sure the spot putty is completely dry before sanding as it will shrink on you as it dries. I usually apply the spot putty and let sit overnight. There is also a product called "extend" and other brand names that stops rust. You rough sand, clean, and spray this on and you can coat over this also. I had some rust on the inside of my fender where the rear fender brace is bolted and this is how I treated it.

Magnut, I have a project bike that I am working on and was planning on doing the paint myself. How does the ColorRite paint compare to a 2K rattle can paint for hardness of finish?

not sure, never used 2K. I used to use PPG when I had a spray booth in my garage. So I am trying this ColorRite. I heard some great things. When researching rattle cans I heard that a lot of people do most of the work of sanding, prepping, and shooting the color. and take to professional shop to have the 2 K urethane coating. ColorRite shines up real nice and use a urethane. I had to let set for 3-4 days at least, then cut it with 1500 and 2000. Then used rubbing compound to shine it. I need to polish it then use McGuires swirl X then some coats of wax. Can't wax for 3-4 weeks so ok there. I am using ColorRite because a guy on Amazon sells it for half what the factory sells it for. 1 can of color and one can of clear for $40 shipped.

OK thanks, I'll look into the ColorRite Paint further. I don't have the room to set up a complete paint booth at my current home, so I was looking for something I could use in my garage without a lot of hassel or having to buy all new painting equipment.

I don't have anything covered up. I am painting on a large cardboard from a new tv I got. Hardley any dust specs. And what I do get wet sands right out.

Finally warm enough to paint again. Got the tank done, turned out real nice. a couple of runs in the clear which will easily be wet sanded out.

When you wet sand with the 1500 and then the 2000 do you wet sand by hand or using an orbital sander?
