Default Shifter Centering Spring Broke?

I couldn't find anything on the forum except someone with a 5-speed. I'm hoping it's easier on my 6-speed (2012 Road King).

Riding to work this morning, the shifter didn't return to center after a shift. I can manually return it and the tranny shifts normally. I know there is a spring in there that is supposed to return the shift lever to center and it probably broke.

My question is has anyone fixed this on a 6-speed, and how hard is it? I'm hoping I only have to remove the tranny top cover. I have a factory manual and will dig into it tonight, but would like to hear from anyone who has done this repair.

Thanks,
Joe

The gear set has to come out to change it.

That's what I was afraid of - from the manual it's the only thing left in the case when everything else is removed...

On the bright side, it's not the worst job. It's just not the best...

Started tearing into it and ordered the parts to fix - gaskets and seals for everything - plus I got a chrome inner primary while I have it apart... Came to about $360 at the new kutter hd.

inspect your gears cafefully, when that spring breaks it can take out some teeth on some gears.

Is this a common thing with this spring breaking? Don't recall hearing about it much.

Pics of the fix would be great! Let us know anything you learn while repairing.

I finally got everything apart and removed the broken spring. Lucky for me the piece fell out when I drained the oil and looked untouched.

I took a lot of pictures and will post something after I get it all back together, including some things I learned.

One question - I'm going to use gear oil in the tranny - what viscosity is best? 75W90 or 75W140? Living in CT it's not so warm as other parts of the country, so I'm thinking 90, as that's the equivalent of 20W50 motor oil that Harley recommends. But if that's too thin, I should go with 140?

Thanks,
Joe
