Default Main shaft seal

This past winter, I had to replace the transmission main shaft seal on my 96 fxdwg. There were no leaks until about a month ago. So, I poured some fluorescent dye in the trans oil, and it was, indeed leaking.

I removed both the inner/outer primary and the trans sprocket and the seal is leaking down toward the bottom.

My questions are these:

1. Is there a way to install it properly with out using the seal installation tool?

2. The manual also says to use loctite 601 sealant. Last time, I used something similar to yamabond; which apparently, didn't work very well. Has anyone used loctite 601, or equivalent?

3. Does anyone have any tips for a leak free install?

I don't want to take this thing apart again if I don't have to.

Thanks for your help/comments/advice.

I found a piece of large PVC and tapped the seal on. They go on fairly easily.

After doing some more looking today, it appears that the seal is not the culprit. It looks like it's leaking between the main drive gear shaft and the inner race of the bearing. How the hell it started leaking from there, I have no clue.

Please see the pics:

Well.... I hope you can come up with one more for me. Take a look at where it appears my leak is coming from.

Input shaft seal. Drill a 1/16 hole in the seal. Small sheet metal screw an a pair of vise grips an pull it out. Gotta pull the IPB inner race first.

Think there is two seals plus the quad ring on a 96 just like my 04. The quad is behind a spacer that is behind the big seal you see. Before it was used, the inner area you see leaking depended on a smooth metal to metal face sealing it. The big seal seals on that OD of spacer but the sleeve is over the seration. Behind the serration is the quad that now seals the face of the spacer. If it leaks, it lets oil run out and the out V in serration. I would look for any chips behind that small seal that Soft pointed out and make sure input-shaft fills snug with no up and down shake. There is two sets of small needle bearings behind it. My first attachment is the main drive gear looking out, then the input shaft and one of the two bearings.

This may help since it's difficult to understand even when I read what I wrote? HA

Thanks for the replies, guys!

Based upon the link you've provided, RS, that would be #19 in the exploded diagram.

Hmm.... I did notice a fair amount of metal particles (very fine) stuck to the magnet. I didn't think too much of it, until now....

If your up for it, rebuilding the tranny would cost about $150 in bearings, gaskets, and seals. I know its not the same but I have a diy tranny rebuild thread in the primary section if you want to check it out. I didn't use any special tools either. You are 80% there as far as pulling it apart.
