How to check primary oil level
Is there a way to check my primary chain drive oil level on a 99 ultra classic?? I have a small leak and would like to keep check on it until I can get it fixed. Is pulling the derby cover the only way?? Thanks joe71

Pretty much unless you have an inspection plate you can pull. The older bikes used to have 'em, maybe yours does. The inspection plate was to check primary chain tension.

Remove 5 derby cover retaining screws, stand bike up straight, lube level should just be touching the outside diameter of the clutch shell.

My 2000 manual as says you can measure 2-3/4" down from the clutch center.

Semi pain but it only takes a few minutes to pull the cover. Just be sure and use a 27 torx bit (not a 25)

Go ahead and get your tape measure out and measure 2-3/4" form the center, guess where that puts the level at???
The outside diameter of the clutch shell, just like the illustration shows...

Stand the bike up first, then remove the Derby cover bolts or else .........

I see what you are getting at, but as long as the primary was serviced properly, oil isn`t going to run out while the bike is on the jiffy stand.
