Default Cost or regearing ?

Hey Folks, I would like to preface this question with a HUGE thank you ! I am transmission/gear stupid and have no concept of what I might be getting into.

Now with that out of the way...All I DO know is that it upsets me greatly to only get about 10mph for the first three gears!

Here is what I would like for you to answer...if possible. Can I just regear? or do I need a whole new tranny or tranny AND motor. I mean dont get me wrong...I'm not trying to get 70mph in first... but 30 would be nice !

Thanks in advance!
P.S. Everything is stock except 1st stage on the motor.

by "10mph for the first three gears" do you mean that at every 10mph of speed you feel the need to shift? You can run the bike up to 30 in first before shifting, but its hard on motor. The 2002 should be outfitted with the 70 tooth rear pulley, going smaller will allow you to run up the speed a bit before shifting, but I really don't think you will like it. Baker makes a six speed replacement for the stock 5-speed, but that can be expensive. Rather than try to re-gear the bike, find someone with the know how to take that stage 1 stock bike and wake it up! Put in a big bore or stroker kit. The stock 5-speed with a built motor can be a lively ride.

A set of cams will wake it up.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking. Your bike will give you about 24mph per 1,000rpm in top gear, so 4,000rpm will get you to just shy of 100mph. So using 4,000rpm as a base, your bike will do 30mph in first gear. It can actually rev IIRC to 5,500rpm, which gives you 40mph in first. Each gear will give you increased speeds over those numbers.

Talking

She's probably muttering under her breath that she'd really like to get goin'! Gear change speeds are in the owners manual. If you don't have one you may be able to download on on the H-D website. Go to the Owners tab.
