Default Clutch failure

Had an interesting occurrence. I converted my 2000 Heritage Springer to a juice clutch last year using HD parts. The slave cylinder in the side cover froze in place. The o-ring on the piston was stretched out and rolled over. It stuck the piston in place. The previous owner had sold me the parts. I used DOT5 as stated on the hand lever master cylinder. If they had used DOT4, would that have caused the o-ring to swell up like that ? I did flush out the parts when I installed them.

Very possible. Did you check the rest of the system and find any of the other seals to be deformed. If not I would say no. Usually a mixture of the 2 will cause jelling. I would check the entire system and clean and reseal everything then use the recommended Fluid.

I've run DOT4 and DOT 5 in the same system with no problems from the rubber parts, indeed some brake parts for the touring bikes (probably others) are identical for both earlier DOT5 and later DOT4 systems. IMHO flushing an hydraulic system to remove one fluid type for another isn't reliable, best to dismantle and clean.

As for your clutch Carlos, you should be able to buy a repair kit with new rubber parts, so strip and clean the slave cylinder and make a fresh start.

That is what I did. Looking at the old part, I was amazed at how much the old o-ring had swelled. ~ $58 with a new slave piston. They don't sell the $.15 o-ring separately.

Default Hydralic Clutch failure

I have an 2015 Tri Glide and while taking a trip to Winchester Va from Swfl I had clutch failure. I had to pump the lever to get it to work. I made it to Winchester and they said that the recall was not for my Vin number. So Harley drained the fluid and added clean fluid. The fluid was coal black in the master cylinder. I made it back home and I have not had another problem out of it so far. The heat seems to be the factor of the failure or????

If anyone had this happen?
