Default Clutch went out

Sitting at a stop sign clutch in an it goes into gear. I thought the cable broke. Rode it home without a clutch, real bitch. Pulled the tranny side cover off and it's not the cable. Pulled the derby off and the clutch looks like it is almost touching the primary cover and sitting lower than normal, what happened?

Clutch basket bearing went, or the big snap-ring came out. Maybe even the
whole basket went bad.

Hope it's the easy ones

Good Luck!

The tranny was just rebuilt so it has to do with that but I'm not going to bad mouth because he's done a lot of work before and it's always perfect. But I think you are right Dan, and looking at the diagram of the clutch,I've never had a TwinCam clutch apart only my old Shovel, I suspect the big snap ring. I had ridden it for almost 70 miles after the rebuild and all was good. Thanks Dan

Put a 1-3/16" socket on that nut and check to make sure it is torqued.

Note: the clutch hub retaining nut is a left hand thread.

That makes good sense. Easy to check too.

I just saw the same thing on a just rebuilt 5 speed, the ledge where the bearing sits in the trap door was gone and shaft could slide from side to side, did a huge amount of damage...

That is exactly what happened. Luckily no damage to the new stuff, he had a slightly used one he put in and it is good now.

We have been trying to figure why it happened. I was helping my indy shop out because his regular mechanic was on vacation, same scenario, total rebuild on an 03 5 speed, guy was riding and lost his clutch (or so he thought), we took it apart (primary side) and the clutch basket was up against the primary cover. It wasn't until I was trying to adjust the clutch that I saw the whole basket moving toward me that we pulled the trap door and saw that the bearing had nothing to hold it from sliding back and forth.
