Gear oil, engine oil and petrol in primary case
Hello all
I have a 1994 XLH1200 Sportster.
When I came back from a short ride I noticed oil over the back end of the bike.
I later found out that it was coming from the engine breather pipe.
I checked the oil in the tank, it was full but smelt of petrol.
I decided to do an oil change. Removed the engine oil drain pipe and only
a small amount of oil came out about 1/2 a pint.
Removed the drain plug under the primary case and it all came out
the gear oil , engine oil and petrol.
I was told that the piston rings have gone or the carb is not set right (S&S super E)
or an oil seal has gone.
I have owned the bike from new 22 years in August . Done over 120,000 miles and do my own
repairs/services.
Engine is now out of the frame and in my shed.
Any help greatfully received

OK, so far so good (other than the gas).
How much time elapsed between the time you looked into the tank and saw it was full, and when you removed the drain pipe and only 1/2 pint drained out?

Sorry what do you want me to say...
Engine was cold... I took the dip stick out of the oil tank looked inside it was full..
I pulled the drain pipe off the frame after loosening the clip about 2 minutes.
Left the oil to drain about 20 to 30 minutes.
About 1/2 a pint came out.
Removed the drain bolt from under the primary case and every thing came out gear oil engine oil and petrol..
