Default Primary Case Capacity

I have religiously taken my bike into HD for their "services" at 1K, 5K, 10K, 15K. Now I am at 20K and tired of paying $500 every time I take it in for services that I can do. (I am a competent mechanic, not a HD technician)

I have gone through the checklist and everything is within specs following the 2011 Touring Service Manual.

My question is this. I purchased all my oils from my HD dealer. I have been running Redline in my Primary since I had some slippage when they put SYN3 in it. Dealer sold me 1 Qt (32oz) of Primary oil and told me that's all I need.

My service manual says I need 38oz. I called the dealer and he gave me the "Oh that's just a recommendation, we always just put 1 qt in" line. Is this true? Will it hurt anything to only have 32oz? I've changed the crankcase oil many times, but the dealer has always changed the Primary and Trans. oil. Just want to make sure I don't screw anything up and the dealer isn't feeding me a line of bull.

Thanks

NB

I would agree with your dealer.

That's a dry primary. Just fill it until it's just over the lowest point of the chain on the clutch basket with bike level.

38oz is a wet refill, 32 ounces will be fine. Its a splash system.

38oz would have been just flat out...inconvenient

32 makes it easy for a few reasons

Thanks for the input. I assumed that 1 qt was ok. I guess I watched too many youtube videos where the mechanic measured out an extra 4 oz and I thought I better check.

Thanks

I used Bel-Ray Primary Fluid the last time I changed, like a week ago and it is sold by the liter bottle, 33.8 ozs. I dumped it in and looked at the clutch basket and it was right where it was supposed to be.
