Default No 6th gear?

So, I am no mechanic. I am just a guy who likes to ride, I bought my 00 Deuce with 39k miles on it, found it at a really low price. All service records included.
Bike has been great so far, had it 10 days, and put about 1000 miles on it.
I was planning on full oil change this weekend.
Today, on my trip to work. mostly highway, I got on the interstate and noticed the bike wouldn't shift to 6th, I got off the highway, and it seemed to shift fine 1st through 5th. after riding a bit it shifted to 6th once no problem.

However its back at it again 1st-5th no problem, wont budge to 6th.
This weekend my shift linkage messed up, It was getting stuck up when I shifted, and was a pain to get back down without going into neutral or downshifting. I pulled off the shifter and cleaned the shaft, lubed it some and it was fine.

I'm really hoping this is somehow the linkage and not my transmission. I am going to have to take it to a local shop. I just don't think I have the money to repair it. I have looked online for worst case scenario repair costs. I have came up empty though.

I guess im just looking to find out an idea of what this might set me back.

Unless you have an aftermarket trans, you only have 5 gears and I think you may have miscounted that one time it went to 6th. Not sure if the linkage problem could be caused by repeatedly looking for 6th gear that isn't there. Sent from my iPhone using IB AutoGroup

Could just be the linkage hanging up. If you can, put the bike on a jack and with the engine off work the shift lever up through the gears and back down. What you're checking to see if the shift return spring is returning the linkage to a quiescent state. If when you shift the linkage is hanging due to wear/friction etc, then you'll never get into the next gear up/down. When you're doing this you might need to move the rear wheel by hand.

As a couple of other have stated, you have a 5speed transmission. Good news it won't cost you a dime to fix it!!

Yabut, he had 6 gears for the first 1000 miles? Now he has 5! I assumed aftermarket tranny with a non-functioning 6th. If not the case then drop the tools, slowly raise ur hands into the air, back away from the bike and leave the garage forever!

I think maybe you are counting wrong from the start.

From a start, you will shift the transmission 4 times, that will be 5 speeds.

Are you still there???

It will only get 6th gear if 6 speed gear lube is used....
