Compensator?

Compensator?
For a couple of months my bike has some issues when starting. clunking, kickback, and occasional backfire, which ain't cool at Micky D's here in South East Texas. Compensator or starter? Any way to tell before I tear into it.
Thanks in advance, Wife is sewing my patches on a Flak Jacket.

Do you get a metal banging noise when starting? That could be a comp. Backfiring, kickback can be a lot of things. Timing off, incorrect map on computer, bad plugs, etc...
Try this. - start the bike, put it in gear, hold the front brake, give some throttle, and slowly release the clutch a bit. Do you hear banging? If so, probably the comp. If no banging, then you have other issues. Start methodically checking ignition and fuel system, computer map if you have one, air filter, plugs, etc...
Any recent mods to the bike?

Thanks Tappet, no recent mods, last one was cams, tappets, and push rods, had it Dyno'd that was around 6,000 miles ago. cleaned the K&N couple weeks ago when I changed the fluids. I'll pull the plugs tommorrow, I forgot to mention it's not all the time, perhaps 1 out 10 startups. That's why I was leaning more to the hard parts.
