Unusual metallic rattle from primary area on acceleration
I picked up my 07 FLHTCU about 2 months ago. Rode her enough to trust she was reliable and headed off. Now I'm about 5k miles into my trip and I'm hearing a sound that sounds as if small rocks are flying up and pinging the tins (they arent) coming from what sounds like my primary.
About 2 weeks ago I heard it first when I would accelerate after shifting, a short metallic rattle. It sounded like an external component clinking together so I didn't think much of it because it was seldom. About 40 miles ago I heard it slightly while cruising in 6th. When I bumped the throttle it would happen louder. This is the first time it happened not after shifting.
I redid my fluids last week and while doing so pulled the primary off and checked to make sure everything look good and tight. It did.
So now im pulled off in nowhere land Colorado trying to figure out if it's safe enough to make it the last 130 miles. Never heard this noise from another bike.

Could be a tank of bad gas; sounds like detonation. Next time you hear the ping in 6th gear, drop down to 5th, accelerate and see if the noise goes away. Try keeping the rpms up higher than you normally do; anything below 2500 is truly lugging the motor anyway. If the noise continues with some fresh 91-93 octane fuel, try a can of octane booster. I don't think the problem is mechanical from what you describe.
