Default Clutch for Police use question.

Hello HD Forum, I work on police bikes and the stock clutches don't last long. We have 2014 FLHTP bikes that get used pretty hard and I get one season out of the stock clutches. I replace the whole clutch basket assembly with all new HD parts. I need the same feel and operation the stock clutch has but it would be nice to get a clutch basket, frictions/steels, hub and pressure plate assembly that will last longer. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Henry

Questions:
- what kind of mileage do the bikes put on in a year?
- when you adjust the clutch...how far do you back out the adjustment?
- what lube do you use in the primary?

Assuming they are only a few years old take a hard look at the Bandit Sportsman. Good to 150 HP and feel like a stock clutch. 120% more surface area and you can use the stock clutch basket. Lever pull and durability would be the key features for road service bikes.

It's a hydraulic clutch so no adjustment. They put 5k-7k a year on but they are very hard miles. I've used Harley primary oil.

Do you work in the motor pool? If so try the barnett carbon fiber frictions(9 discs NOT the extra plate version) with all stock parts. Should stand up to the abuse and not break the bank when servicing an entire fleet. Fluid? I'd try Bel Ray V-Twin primary fluid, i use it and have good results and have heard very good results from others in high abuse situations.

Interesting, I just had a friend call me to look at his clutch on his 2006 Road King Police. The bike wants to lurch when in gear with the clutch pulled in. He says if he revs it the lurching eases and it also makes it easier to find Neutral.

Because they are Hydraulic and with the stock set up you are correct there is no adjustment so when the plates start to wear that's it, done, replace it. Here is an alternative.

http://crustyoldsite.bakerdrivetrain...lic-side-cover

With our set up you will need to use the mechanical 3 piece push rod system which in turn will allow you to adjust the clutch when needed.

You just need to get the center rod, adjuster screw, lock nut and release plate from Harley.
