Leaky Primary
 

I've got a primary leak on my '95 FXDWG, does this Genuine James kit come with all the possible seals it could be?

I've got my service manual, chain lock tool, and a good assortment of sockets, anything else I'll need to get this done besides a quart of oil?

If the leak is coming from the primary, that kit should stop it; sometimes it is hard to tell the difference. However, if the leak is from the tranny, you will need more parts and more tools. Be sure you identify the source of the leak before you dive in.

You don`t have to know exactly what is leaking before you dive in, but certainly before you button it up...:icon_mrgreen:

If it were my bike, I would also remove the front pulley and replace the big oil seal, the pulley spacer and quad seal. Use new pulley lock bolts when going back together.

Take a close look at the shifter shaft seal, and check that the shift lever is tight on the shaft, if not, now is the time to get it right.

Also look for a leak between the mainshaft and the main drive gear (the main drive gear is the splined shaft that the pulley is mounted onto, the mainshaft passes right through the center).

As Dan mentioned, if you are going all the way there, replace all the seals. You will need to buy the quad seal and the main drive gear seal along with the primary rebuild kit...

just what I needed to know, I'd like to replace everything I can within reason while I"m in there.

99% sure it's the primary, I rode it for a few weeks at a time and it's the only one of the 3 that are getting low.

I just dove into mine thinking I had a shift shaft seal leak and found the IPB seal leaking as well. Replaced the IPB with a Baker high torque bearing and now waiting for one more gasket in order to button it up.

BTW, Ronnies partsfinder is an indispensable tool for finding the various seals, gaskets, o-rings and retaining clips, etc.
