I was wondering, how many K's should I expect to get out of my drive belt before it becomes unreliable and prone to breaking?
Only I want to change it out well before it comes close to breaking, leaving me stranded on the side of the road.
I have friends who have 100,000+ miles on their original belt. Also have a friend that had his belt break at 18,000 miles due to a rock that got between the belt and pulley.
That said, be sure to check it once a year for cracks or tears.
Just inspect at the stated intervals in your service manual. A few years ago I found a thin sliver of flint stuck in mine, having cut through to the outside. I removed it and carried on riding, but checking it more often. After about 4k miles the wound in the belt began to change it's appearance, I also had a long trip planned, so changed it. Even when damaged they can carry on for a while. The other thing to observe is correct tension. Check with the correct tool and don't run it either too tight or slack.
