Unhappy 1989 FXSTC Tranny leak

Well I'm posting this in here in hopes someone will help me figure out A) what I did wrong and B) what I should do next time (hopefully very soon).

So I recently replaced the Transmission main shaft seal and the small quad seal. It was definitely leaking from behind the seal as it did a mini waterfall once I pulled the Stock Pulley. I did not use a seal installer to stick it in the .05" that's suggested. First is this my problem? because I'll order it and see if I can keep the old seal or use it anyway for the next seal. someone mentioned this mystery 5th gear seal. I don't know what that is or where it is, supposedly could be my problem. Not sure.

So it's a bones stock bike except the bars and a few beauty marks. where do I go next, I can order georges mainshaft seal tool and hope it comes in friday.

This is my only mode of transport.

Installer is not a must as long as you are careful but make sure you lube both the OD of the seal as well as the ID. Also replace the pulley spacer when changing the seal. It get's grooved over time. Harley part number 33334-85.

Do you think I could just replace that spacer and the quad seal and leave the new mainshaft seal? and what about that 5th gear seal is that anything or for later models?

You could give it a whirl, if the seal in the 5th main was leaking you would see evidence on the outside of the pulley.

Is there a big difference between the FLSTC and The FXSTC? finally figured out why I wasn't getting info on the fifth gear seal, because they just started calling it that, all my old manuals and everything up until splin shafts call it the main gear seal or MDG seal etc.

Softails used the same seals from 94 to 06.

Are you still using the pulley and spacer from 1989, or has the pulley been upgraded to the late `94 parts?

worn splines on the drive pulley or on the main gear where the pulley slides onto it will cause a severe leak or a loose big pulley nut will do it too. early evos had a narrower pulley-spline area than the later models and they are known to have the splines wear out and cause leaks.the only way to stop the leak is to replace the pulley, seals and the spacer with new, upgraded parts. you may need to replace the main gear too if the splines are even slightly worn.
