Default Primary oil level for 1989

I'm having an issue with my primary chaincase losing oil into the crank.
This link goes to a post I made about the issue.

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/prima...-oil-loss.html

While I've got everything apart I'm trying to consider everything I can.
A friend of mine suggested I may be overfilling my primary with oil.
In my oem manual it tells me that for an 89 I should be filling to the bottom of the clutch inspection cover.
In 1990 this level was adjusted to the bottom of the diaphragm spring. He suggested that the 89 level may have been an engineering mistake and that I should research and find what more experienced mechanics have figured out.

Any experience others have is greatly appreciated

I think even over filling the primary it should never leak into the crank.there are 3 seals in there where one or more are bad, that would be best case scenario.worst case scenario would be a cracked case.Thats something that needs to be checked, sooner then latter.

That's what I was thinking too, the inner primary is already off and everything looks good.
Thanks for the reply

Any primary oil that gets into the engine oil tank can only do so through the crankcase oil seal on the primary side. It is a known escape route for the stuff! As for primary oil level, I suspect the slightly lower 1990 level is quite good enough. What's a few ounces of oil between friends!

For future reference we have a dedicated Evo section, where you can bump into fellow owners. Call in and take a look around!

Set your primary lube level the same as the later model bikes, that`s all the lube you need in there.

Thanks I've got everything together and put some miles on this weekend. Hopefully everything will seal up nice.
