Default primary oil level

What makes the level dry or wet when adding oil ? I had my outer cover off to install the Baker Attitude Adjuster and to me that would make the primary dry. Some say only if you disassemble the clutch pack makes it a dry primary. i put 40 ozs. back in mine and it looks as if it could take more to bring it up on the clutch pack.

With bike standing up straight, the oil should just be touching the outside diameter of the outer clutch shell.

Same for every big twin with a Diaphragm spring clutch.

Wink

As Dan says - don't bother about the wet/dry thing, except to have that amount available. Fill to the correct level, don't just pour the stuff in! Same applies to the other oil holes.

DRY fill..

Dry is if you open it up not just remover derby cover. Bike straight up fill slow.

If you do this wet fill. However either way, fill point is the same straight up

When I drained mine yesterday, I added 38 ounces like my service manual said and it was at the line like in the top photo.

Red face

Something to remember is that the main purpose of the oil is to lubricate the chain. That will inevitably fling the stuff everywhere, making everything else wet, but that is a collateral consequence. My first Harley was a shovelhead, which came new with a dry-sump primary - in other words it fed oil onto the chain, then pumped it back to the oil tank. The clutch was dry, not wet with oil, however keeping it that way was a challenge. I suspect that is why H-D eventually went to a primary oil sump, which simplified things a lot, not least for us humble owners!

Maybe the year matters, but I'm guessing it's also very important that the oil also lubricates the inner primary bearing and the compensator.

I did have the outer primary cover off along with the compensator and chain to install the Baker Adjuster. It took 45 oz's to get it alittle above the yellow line in the pic. Maybe a quarter inch above it. I do think there was very litttle oil left laying in my primary after taking it apart.

That's inevitable! The chain probably creates a 'perfect storm' of oil mist inside the casing, which saturates everything.

There is an oil feed hole to the IPB where it is important to not block with retaining ring upon servicing.
