Starter Bolt Stripped
On my 2001 FLHR Roadking, the starter has for some time, been dragging and hard to start on occassion. The starter seems to be pulling a large number of amps while cranking to the point of melting the positive terminal block of the battery. I was thinking that I possibly had a loose ground cable causing the problem, and after removing and cleaning the battery cables at both ends, stripped out the starter bolt that holds the negative battery cable to the starter as well as holding the starter to the case. The silly part is the thread pulled out before any real force was applied to tighten it, which makes me think it never was really tight. Now Im thinking Ill have to remove the primary cover, clutch, etc, and either install a heli-coil or a time-sert. Has anyone had any experience with this application? Is there enough casting there to install threads and what would the best way to approach the problem? Thanks in advance.
