Burn Smell In Primary Case

Rode my 07 Dyna from Tucson to Apache Junction Harley, 100 miles, for the 1000 mile service.Told them not to change the fluids sinceI changed them all at 600 miles. Was told that they should change the primary oil again because they said it smelled burned (they open the derby to adjust the clutch)? I changed it hot at 600 and smelled nothing odd. I am very easy on a clutch. They said maybe the clutch was out of adjustment ; they adjusted it as part of the service. Any thoughts? Think my clutch could be damaged or prematurely worn as a result?

Yes you pull the derby to adjust the clutch.Lot's of break in going on with a new clutch. I would not sweat it myself at this point. If that clutch was really fried you would know it.

+1 with Darkside's reply. How does the clutch feel after the fluid change / adjustment? If ok, don't worry. Ride it.

Something doesn`t sound quite right to me.You did initial change at 600-no smell.400 miles later you have a burnt smell? The price of oil vs. clutch plates is cheap anyway but it shouldn`t have gotten burnt in this short of time unless it was low of fluid and/or you were towing cars around the yard,or not enough fluid on your change..How far out from the grip was it engaging vs. where it`s at now?Check it again at 400-500 miles and see what it`s like.I think they just wanted to sell you a quart of primary fluid. If it happens again I would think maybe faulty spring plate. That`s (IF) it happens again.Good luck and check back in with your findings when it occurs.Good luck,Toby

Could be stator problems. Those babies stink when they go and it's easy enough to check.

28guage has only 1000 miles on his bike.I would hope that`s not his problem.Toby

Yeah, I know...but like I said, a stinking primary is a symptom and it's easy enough to rule out. And I've heard of a lot more bad stators coming out of the mofoco than bad clutches. At any rate, the guy asked for ideas and that's one that nobody had mentioned.

With the mileage he road it to the dealer for service and back I kind of figuired it wasn't that or he would be having problems with the bike even running since he would have no charging system. As you get closer to that initial service the clutch gets looser and looser (and may slip slightly)with all the new wear that last couple hundred miles could have definitely built some heat.I adjusted mine twice before the initial service.Sometimes Easy means different things as well.Doyou let the clutch out really slow and slip it (wich builds heat)? Either way at this point I would ride it and go from there.

Cooked stator for sure if it has a funky electrical smell.
