Clutch Basket in Pieces chain jumped and pics
anyone have any idea what causes this to happen? Tensioner cracked, chain popped link and jumped sprocket, clutch basket broken to pieces...
Could this issue have anything to do with it ??

RE: Clutch Basket in Pieces chain jumped and pics
Um........
Something was weak here.....hard to say for sure exactly what happened.
I personally do not like the automatic primary adjuster though. While they sound like a nifty device in theory, they for whatever reason tend to run the primary chain on the tight side.
I have seen a primary chain break a link before and totally came apart on a guys ride just about the time the EVO came out. He had a hopped up EVO that would really run.....anyways, chain came apart and tore some stuff up pretty bad. It even knocked a hole in the primary cover as well. At the time, we all came to the conclusion that he had the chain too tight.
He always thought, a little too tight is better than a little too loose.

RE: Clutch Basket in Pieces chain jumped and pics
The initial failure was the clutch basket. The piece lodged in the teeth, snapped the tensioner as it was overstressed. Piece of the basket probably covered the teeth and made a ramp for the chain to move over as shown by the snapped link. Sure is ugly. I've heard of one other basket explode. I'd have to wonder if the clearance between the plates and drum are sufficiant and with high heat from the plates crack the hub from expansion.Once cracked centrifigal force will eventually finish the job.

Had the same thing happen with an '80 FLT with 75K mi many years ago. You're lucky, my chain broke while pulling away from a light. Destroyed every thing in the primary: tensioner, teeth off engine and clutch sprocket, cracked both primary covers.
Put a Primo belt setup in, epoxied the cracked cases and never had a problem after that.

hmmmmm..looks familiar. my buddy's 07 ultra did the same thing after installing a barnett clutch ,103 kit ,a cam....then doing one too many hole shots. the clutch outer failed then did the number to everything else. (o yes...the clutch outer is available only as a complete assembly w/clutch and related components). i forgot to mention.....it also twisted the crank.

next question is how to avoid this happening again? This is an 07 Ultra Shrine Edition with a 110cid upgrade, pistons, cam, head work, 50mm throttle body, it runs 104HP 114TQ on a dyno, the original stock HD clutch was slipping and I opted for the scorpion had it for 3 to 4 months no problems. Don't want the same thing to happen again so what are the options. there are no other baskets available for the 07 FLHTCU that I could find. I agree with RBABOS as to what happened possibly the tensioner went first and caused slack to allow the chain to catch a sprocket tooth and pop the one link then the link cut the basket to peices. RBTGOLD sounds like a very similar setup on your buddy's bike anyone else know of any barnett clutches doing this in High Output '07 bikes. I heard a single bang at a redlight and the bike stalled out restarted it and did not seem to be anything wrong. 200 yards from my driveway it went bang again and this time kept banging so I coasted in and called for a tow.
