Default Derby cover won't come off

Yes I'm a newbie,&nbsp\\;and depending on how this goes, maybe a TOOL too....
&nbsp\\;
Anyways, my first is an '08 Street Bob and I am trying to complete the 1k mile service.&nbsp\\; I have completed everything except changing the primary oil.
&nbsp\\;
Derby cover&nbsp\\;has the 5 T27 torx screws in it.&nbsp\\; I have broken 3 T27 bits trying to get them off so I can change the primary oil.&nbsp\\; The owners manual says nothing of them being reverse threaded, it does say it should be torqued from 75 - 108 #'s.&nbsp\\; All of my buddies have no clue, one said to get a black T27 bit which is what is used for impact wrenches.&nbsp\\; That one broke just as quick as the others.&nbsp\\; Any other ideas or suggestions? &nbsp\\;At this point I am hoping that I am missing something stupid because I can not imagine it should be this bad.&nbsp\\; I am in some bad need of some good advice/experiences.&nbsp\\; Thanks in advance for any help.

They are lefty loosy /righty tighty screws, &amp\\; they should not be in there that tight, if you keep breaking torx bits , i would recommend getting an impact driver , just be careful not to slip &amp\\; damage your cover,

They shouldn't be that tight.&nbsp\\; You might need and impact wrench.&nbsp\\; Once you get them out I'd replace them with Stainless Steel socket head cap screws.&nbsp\\; And the torque setting you mentioned in your post should be inch pounds.

My buddy, the gorilla, had that problem on his second oil change.&nbsp\\; He wound up using a hand impact wrench.&nbsp\\; You know, the kind you hit with a hammer.&nbsp\\; One of the screws required an oversized torque with the impact hammer wrench.&nbsp\\; He put them back in against my advice.&nbsp\\; I plan to be there when he changes his oil the next time.

Kinda what I was thinking (or afraid of).&nbsp\\; Will the stainless screws come out easier than what is in there?&nbsp\\; Yes the manual setting is in inch #'s.&nbsp\\; Thanks for all your help.

I'v been through 4 oil changes so far with the stainless cap screws on my derby cover and have never had a problem.&nbsp\\; I just hate torx bolts I prefer my hardware to be socket head.

You might try heating them up before trying to remove them.&nbsp\\; Maybe someone at the factory used the wrong color loctite.&nbsp\\; Then change out the screws to stainless allens.

Drill off the heads and unscrew the shafts with vise grips. Then replace with 3/4" #20 coarse thread allen head SS cap screws. When you remove the derby mark the top hole with tape so you return it to it's original orientation as it will conform to the shape of the primary cover. If the shafts are stuck then heat lightly. Torque new screws to 100 inch lbs. Put permatex anti-seize on the new screw threads.

The clowns at the factory overtorqued them. They did the same thing to my08 RK. Get a impact driver and then re-torq to spec. you'll be good on getting the cover off after that.
