Default Help with 6-speed gear set selection

I'm planning a 95" build along with this switch. Should I look at one set over another? How much attention should I give to ratios, helical versus straight cut, etc?

Considering a 6-speed gear set conversion in my 06 FXSTS Springer. I started shopping around and found some with very different price points. Source for these estimates is J&P.

SE, S&S, and Baker retail around $2200-2500. Not sure about the SE kit but the Baker set has helical gears for 4-6. S&S are all helical cut gears.

Then I found a set from RevTech for about $725. It appears that the RevTech gear set is straight cut gears. Are helical gears worth the $1500+ price difference? Or is there some other reason for such a price difference?

Aren't the stock gears in 06 Softails all straight cut?

after installing revtech, baker and screamin eagle transmissions, I would have to recomend the baker. I feel the quality is well worth the extra coin.

DO NOT GET A REVTECH!!! they give a new meaning to the word junk!! if a baker,S&S,jims(SE) are too much, there are prowlers, ultima that are around 1000.00 (but i would do S&S or baker)

I've had a REVTECH 5 speed behind my 113" Ultima iin my softail for 5 years and I beat the snot out of it. Never had a problem, shifts great, smooth and quiet. I just installed their 6 speed gear set in my bagger behind a 95, haven't had the chance to try it yet because of all this damn snow we got, but I'll keep ya posted...

the prob with revtech is the 6 speed, not the 5 speed.5 speeds are just a copy off a HD 5 speed, the prob is with the 6 speed, insted of copying a baker(like everyone else did)CCI decieded to desighn their own 6 speed, well their design enginers messed up,all other 6 speeds use a thicker trap door and put the extra 2 gears there.revtech decided to have stock width door and skinny up the gears, not a good idea, theve have a mess of recalls and problems(with shift forks too).we did warrantty work on them until CCI would only pay to replace the recalled parts, not taking the trans out & reinstalling it,wanted shops to eat that part, screw that.since youve got one, good luck with it,but buying one now,ide look elsewere

Thanks for the replies! Just based on write-ups and Baker's reputation in general led me to believe that the Baker gear set might be the better buy.

Any consideration with gear ratios and larger engine builds? I am planning a 95" build. I heard rumors that the 07+ 96" HDs power output is somewhat restricted by the use of the gear ratio's in the stock 6-speed. Don't want to do the same with my 95" build.

I have the Ultima on order. Looked at the gear set up close and it appears good. Wanted a overdrive, not a direct drive. Time will tell as I am doing the install now and have to wait till spring to try it.

Good luck on the decision.

i agree 100%,the overdrive trans is the way to go.did a ultima 6-speed last summer, had probs with it.had to send it back, but it was behind a S&S 124" with a nut for an owner,he`s broken just about everything else on the bike,so it could have been him, ultima took care of it,no probs

I heard that the issues with the Revtech gear sets have been resolved and that the issues are with the early ones and later ones are better. Hopefully it'll hold up, it's installed and ready to go...
