Default ATF in primary

I'm just about to get back on the road and I'm thinking about trying ATF in my primary. Which type is best to use? TIA

We use Castrol Type VI it is a synthetic that works extremely well. No clutch slippage, nice shifts and no other problems. just under $7.00 a quart at advance Auto

I tried syn type IV in my primary and my clutch would slip if I got on it over 65. Switched back to 20-50 mobil one and no problems but I know others use it and all is ok. Its only a quart and its not going to break the bank so go for it.

You can use any type you want. The type F slips less then the others though. As well as the B&M trick shift. I have been using the Dexron III myself as Im not pushing a lot of HP at this time. It gives a nice smooth engagement. Try em all and find out which one you like best. Start cheap and work your way up to the syn types.

I use the same type that I use in my truck, one less bottle of special lube on the shelf (Mercon V).

There's an article on clutches in the June issue of American Rider. Joe Minton said that ATF is a poor choice for the primary. His reasoning is that while it is fine for the clutch plates it is not good for the chain and gears over time.
Not sure he is correct as I have used ATF on and off for years without issue.

I hear that a lot,(ATF no good for chains and gears) but there are gears in an auto tranny and how many people change their transmission oil in their car every 5000 miles??...I use Type F in mine and never more than a bit of fine "paste " on the drain plug which IMO is just normal wear.
