sporster shifter issues

2000 SPortster

I swapped out the stock primary cover for a chrome cover

Clutch adjsutment is spot on. have an aftermarket forward control kit that was working fine before the cover change.

but the shifter is all jacked up now, when I push it down into 1st it goes fine, but when I go to shift into other gears the arm stays up when you pull up on it, and I can't get to neutral unless I pull all the way up on it, and keep tepping it down until it "finds" neutral.

riding up the street, I can get up to about 3rd gear, then it's like it won't shift up anymore, and the shifter arm stays up. When I sit down and move the lever, the seal around the shaft moves with the shaft.

It just seems the shifter should spring back after each shift, but it doesn't.

What gives?

Any help would be appreciated

You might have a broken shifter pawl or spring in tranny.

yeah, thanks. I'm taking it to the dealer to fix....it's real jacked up, and I don't feel like trying to fix it with basic tools,in a garage with no heat or power(lights) in January.

Don't blame ya. It's a pretty inexpensive part, just a pain in the arse to get to!
