primary oil level

I did my 1000 mile service on my 12 FLHTK today. I have a service manual and it says 38oz wet or 45oz dry. I am assuming that I should put 38 oz in and that's what I did, but it doesn't explain how to check for proper level . Kinda leaves you in the dark. Anybody have any ideas on this? Thanks for the help

You are right, knowing how much is supposed to go into the primary doesn`t help you one bit when you are trying to check the level.

With the bike upright, the primary lube level should just touch the outer clutch shell.

Same for every Harley with a wet clutch.

Fill it to the correct level, as Dan shows, don't just pour in a set amount! Same comment applies to every fluid in your bike. Look upon the amounts in the manual as being what you need available to do the job.
