Default Starter Drive Problems- 1979 FLH

Hi all,
I have a 1979 FLH Shovel, 80 inch. Has anyone experienced problems with their starter drive destroying starter rings? It is a new starter, solenoid and starter ring. I believe all the parts are V-twin aftermarket parts. Thanks in advance. More info can be provided if needed.

what happens when you try to start the bike?is the starter over-running? not dis-engageing?alignment problems? is the solenoid sticking? maybe mis-aligned ring> all these are questions, thought items.i have a '79 FXEF that starts with a turn of the key. not bragging here, and had a '74 FXE with no problems. just to show that it is possible for the starting system to operate normally. lb
when did the problem start?

The bike will turn over. It would appear to be alignment problem, the starter gear is making a horrendous grinding against the ring, slipping. could it be any difference that the primary cover is an aftermarket part (common problem perhaps?) I was told that the cover, if not machined right, can cause some major problems. Thanks!

+1 on the aftermarket cover, on some the tabs and holes are off as well as not being machined flat.In turn pinching and throwing everything off......
