primary leaking from derby cover
Hey everyone,
I recently changed all of my fluids to get my bike ready for the winter and noticed today the primary was leaking from the derby cover. I checked all of the screws and they were nice and snug. I replaced the paper gasket with a new one and I'm guessing this is the issue. I was thinking of opening it back up and rubbing some oil on the gasket to get a better seal. I also replaced the torx head screws with new hex head screws because one of the torx was a little stripped. I don't think this is the issue but I figured I'd let you guys know just in case. any suggestions?
Thanks,
Scott

The mating surfaces need to be clean - no residue oil. The cover needs to be mated properly and the screws need to be tightened in a torquing pattern. Although unlikely, the cover could be warped, threads could be stripped? Get an impact screwdrive and ensure you use the proper size torx bit.

When you changed those screws, were you careful to note exactly how they shouldered into the cover? If the new screws shouldered differently, then that was the source of your leak, and not the gasket. Hell, I don`t even change the gasket on my cover, but the gasket is rubber. I`ve not yet had a leak, and the gasket looks perfect every time I remove the cover.

I battled that same problem till I was blue in the face,,,kept replacing gasket after gasket and tried silicone sealer on the gaskets and just sealer and no gasket. After a time of brain dead I discovered that it was the bolts that were seeping the oil. I just dabbed silicone around the bolt shank just under the head and no more leaking,,,,just be sure to wipe off the excess silicone off from around the head of the bolt as it ozes out from under it,,of course common sense would prevail there.
