Post Little Ride Planned, Non-GPS Riders Question

Okay everyone, I know in this day and age people rarely leave home with out their computer in their pocket. Sure it's a great tool... You can get information instantly and that's amazing. It allows friends to instantly contact you and maybe even see where your at or what your doing or thinking. But, trust me you don't want to know wha tI'm doing or thinking, LOL!

I refuse to ride my bike with a phone or GPS strapped to my handlebars (I just don't dig it). I like the opportunity to be lost, totally in the moment, and untethered from the day to day world. I've used paper maps and I've used the, "I know the general direction" method.

But recently, I was told about a ride that I want to roll and it's off the beaten path. I don't want to have to stop and pull out a map so I'm trying to find ways to have the main turning points or little towns I'm headed to visible on my bike. I know I can use pencil, paper, and tape... But, it got me thinking. A buddy of mine once told me about some type of pencil or marker that he would use to write on his windshield or tank.

So, my question/puzzle is...

Is it a wax pencil? Any other recommendations?

Any input on this odd question is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I don't use GPS either, but I look at Google Maps before I leave, write route numbers down, and just pull the paper out of my pocket when I stop once in awhile. Can't help you with writing on the windshield.

Google "dry erase white magnetic sheet." Amazon has them and it sounds like it may work. Cut them down to size for your tank.

I use a China marker/grease pencil and write my route for the day on my mirror, been doing it forever.

Grease pencil. I used that quite extensively in the Army. I had a vinyl map holder that I would write on constantly.

I have used a plastic baseball card sleeve type protector.
Held to windshield pouch with a binder clip.
I write the information i want with pencil and in small type.
Pencil writes smaller than pen.
It gives me about the space that a baseball card would have on both sides to write.
Additional little sheets can be placed inside sleeve for return route.
I go on google earth and virtually ride the route to note anything that would help identify a specific turn and i note them.
Note things that are likely not to change just before turns or along route: a river, bridge, water tower, church, cemetery, monument etc.

I saw a you-tube video that the rider was writing on the windshield, didn't show the pen though.
