so im planning this trip for 2019 from sturgis to glacier. for those of you who have done going to the sun road it is the route better east to west or opposite? thanks jeff
Run it east to west. Most of the road has no guardrail. It's more of a long climb than a lot of switchbacks so when traveling from the east you will spend most of the time on the inside lane against the mountain versus looking over the cliff. For some not a huge deal, but the day I climbed from west to east I encountered light rain (August 2016), still occasionally pull a chunk of seat foam out of my XXX.
changed plan to yellowstone/tetons for the following week. I think i will have to save glacier for the next run out. so mush to go to and just not enough time off to do it.. thanks
Having done it both ways, what was said about the guard rails is true, HOWEVER, the turnouts are on the right side of the road going west to east. Going westbound, the right side of the road is the uphill side. You can stop, but you have to cross the road to get to the views.

Like some others have said, I've done it both ways and it was great. Lots of beautiful country in Montana to see, enjoy your trip.

Make sure to ride Chief Joseph Highway and Bear Tooth Pass. Spend some time in Cody.
