Trying to plan my ride. Any really cool stops anyone recommend on the way. I've got all the tips about staying away from St.Louis and Kansas city but just curious if anyone had any sight seeing ideas along the way. Cool bars, fun highways. Going to be a 2 day trip so can't get to far off the path..

 

Man, if my route was taking me near KC, I would stop there just for the BBQ.

Where in TN is your starting point?

 

I've made the trip three times from TN and unfortunately don't have any suggestions for sight seeing. If you're going to do it in two days, I doubt you'll have the time or energy to do much anyway. The route I took the last two times was through Nebraska. Took 29 up to 80 and went west to Paxton. Then took some back roads up to 385 and came out in Rapid City. It was a somewhat scenic route. I don't know why you would stay away from St Louis and Kansas City... Unless you're travelling though during rush hour, it's not bad. No worse than going through Nashville. Going up, I always planned 3 days to get there so that I could get to the campground in the afternoon to get setup and situated. Two days to make it back though, no problem. if you skip going through St. Louis then you won't see the Gateway Arch or be able to get toasted raviolis at Pietros

 

Slab it to Sioux City...the Route 20 west to the bottom of the black hills to Sturgis.

If you want to miss the super slab of 70 across Missouri try 36 . It runs parallel to 70 , it's a little further north it will drop you on to 29 north out of st.Joe, bypassing KC. A lot less semi traffic.

 

We took a northerly route up through Illinois, Iowa and Minn. last year just to see some different country.

Loved the big farms of Illinois and going through Iowa.

The St. Louis/KC route is sort of boring to me, plus the roads are terrible into St Louis.

 

I can't believe someone would enter Kansas and not see the biggest ball of twine. It only added 1,000 mile to my trip from Beaverton, Oregon. It is Cawker City great back roads..
