Devil’s Highway
I am headed to southern Arizona for work tomorrow. I expect the meetings to last all day so I’m going to rent a hotel room and then Thursday I’m going to ride Hwy 191 (aka the Devil’s Highway) north through Morenci and on up to Alpine and Springerville, then east toward Showlow and Globe before returning to Phoenix. I’m really looking forward to it. The heat here in the valley has been unusually hot for this time of year, but it should be nice in the mountains.

Rode it last summer north to south from Alpine to Morenci. Fill up before this section because there is nothing but curves in between. Great road, fun to ride. Had a deer cross in front of me, I swear it came straight down a vertical cliff, crossed the road and went straight down a vertical cliff. Little gas station in Alpine had a cool HWY 666 patch. Enjoy......

Myself and friends will be doing this trip the weekend of 5/19. Easily the best two-day trip in AZ with beautiful scenery and we will be staying at the Hannagan Meadow Lodge in Alpine on the 19th. Pack warm clothes, Alpine is at 9,200 feet and although highs will be in the 70's with low's will be in the 30's (or lower). Last week the low in Alpine was 25.

This ride was one of favorites in Arizona. Over 100 miles of twists, turns, rises, and falls. My navigation screen was spinning due to the constant turns.
The weather was hot in Morenci (92 degrees) and I got started later than I had hoped, but the weather was beautiful 20 miles north of Morenci. In fact, temps dropped to 68 degrees in Hannagan’s Meadow...almost chilly compared to where I had just been.

Rather than take the 60 south to Globe (from Showlow) I took the 260 west to Payson and then the 87 south to Phoenix.
