Thumbs up Mount Washington N.H.

Nice ride on the bike (or cage) . If you ride up from Vt. you ride through White Mountain Nat'l forest. From it's peak of higher than 6200' , you literally see the outline of at least 3 states and it is as close to heaven one can get ! I recommend it for the bucket list. Go early October for best hotel rates.Live like a king for little dough. Especially if sharing with other bunkies. When you descend Mt. Washington, use low gear and brake as little as you can. It is steep. Ride on !

Yep, it's a great ride but not for the faint of heart. No guard rails and there's a stretch that is perpetually dirt and gravel. October may be a bit cold at the top so bring appropriate clothing. Going down is just as much fun. Watch out for sand and gravel in the turns.

I like to go up during Laconia Bike Week, they close the road to motorcycles only which removes a bunch of people in cages that should not be driving that kind of road. Did it once with cages, they literally would not move over to let a MOTORCYCLE pass. Nice view at the top fir sure.

I gotta agree with Architect. I've been up with the cagers and it makes riding back down damn scary. Those morons that drive the tourist vans are freakin crazy.

We were there last week. We caught up with a car that the lady driving was obviously scared to death! She straddled the center line and refused to get over when she met anyone. She just stopped and let them figure out how to get by. We got to the top and this big burly weight lifting looking guy was at the counter stating he was not driving back down, he needed a driver to get him off the mountain! I was surprised it only cost him $20! I've been up there several times and I always enjoy it.

well.... may be it was best we did not?? In a rented Armada. We were in Portland ME a couple of years ago. Explored the coast a few days then were planning to go up there. Mom had back issues that changed our mind. We did Vermont and New Hampshire. Thanks for the pics, !!

I’ve been up a dozen + times. A few tips for the uninitiated,

First leave plenty of room between you and the person in front of you because some of the hairpin turns are so off camber that you’ll only be able to reach the ground on one side if you have to stop. Cars often stop in the middle of a turn if a car is coming the other direction. If you are caught off guard, you could go over, especially if two up. Seen it happen twice.

Second, the gravel in the parking lot at the top is like marbles. The footing is marginal at best.

Lastly, the record high temp at the top is 71 degrees. The summer highs are usually in the low 50s and the wind is usually blowing hard. Dress accordingly.

Its certainly doable for a competent rider. Just be aware most cages are going to be scared and stop unexpectedly. So why go up? If the weather is clear, the scenery is spectacular. Certainly the most dramatic east of the Mississippi.

What eglide said, the parking lot at the top SUCKS. worse then the road going up, real deep 3/4" stone, nightmare on a bike. Still worth it though......

Going there next year. Spent a lot of time up there years ago. Never went up. It's a bucket list stop on the bike for me. So its happening. Just scratched Devils Tower off the list last week.
