Tail of The Dragon ride.
Hello all. 5 of us are riding from NJ to ride the Tail in October. Was wondering other than riding the tail. What are some good attractions in the area? We’re going for 4 full days. Thanks. |
Ride the Cherohala Skyway which is spectacular and as much of Moonshiner 28 as you can fit in. Both have great views and plenty of twisties to keep you interested.

It is hard to find a road that is not great in that area, Wayah Road is a great ride IMHO.
Also, a trip to Helen, GA is worth consideration. |

From Franklin heading east on 64 was some great waterfalls. It was VERY crowded on a july weekday.
You said attractions. A weekday in October should not be crowded. Cades Cove is a cool place. Often way crowded. If not, lots of wildlife and old buildings. Good place to see bears, but they may be hunting hibernation by then?? |

Wayah Rd is also one of my favorites. It runs between 74 and 64 just east of 129 coming out of Robbinsville. I think it's also called CR 1310

There’s lot of great places up there you’ll find them when you arrive Enjoy |
Skyway and hit up Bald River Falls. The lady at the Harley outpost shop told us to turn around and go see the falls and it was worth it. Blue Ridge Parkway, Sidewinder, Copperhead, Gauntlet, Devil's Triangle, Moonshiner... 4 full days? that's it? maybe if it was 4 weeks you MIGHT be able to hit up all the good roads in that area. They have maps in that area at gas stations and stores that label all the rides and loops you can do.

Wayah Rd is ones of those roads that is just nice to ride... The new pavement is nice, Some switch backs sneak up on you but the nice sweepers with the lake views are nice...My wife n I ride it every chance we get.

Yep, what they said. I will be there for the week 10/13.

I went to East TN and Western NC about a month ago and spent eight days. There are a lot of great rides, including the Dragon, but when I go back next year, I'll spent more time in the Maggie Valley and Ashville area. Here's my agenda for the week I was there. Oh, don't miss Copperhead Loop.

Just got back from 129 and Cherohala PW, last night, 3 buds from Chicago rode down to INDY and we left Indianapolis Friday morning. I preferred the Cherohala PW myself over the Tail, The parkway ride has lots of overlooks and is a little less technical to ride.
Came back thru 4-hours of mountain rain and fog yesterday, got a little cold in the rain but we made it back OK and had a great time. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...49021242ec.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...d3f80c1279.jpg |

I do enjoy the Cherohala. I think I could do it all day long, if it were not for the amount of awesome roads out there. I will ride again in that area (in laws live in Tenn) but I doubt I will do the Tail again unless I am with friends who have never done it. I enjoy the finding the less traveled road.

Im originally from Long Island .. but never really rode New England. I and a buddy did NY, VT, VT, NH, ME .. a little MA and PA also. These maps made things VERY easy. Ive been in NC for about 22 years now.
Do yourself a favor man .. trust me. Get one of these. It will give you so much to ride you wont know what to choose AND you will know where your going before you get here .. you know .. instead of .. "Where the h3ll are and where are we going? http://www.snowmobilenystores.com/Mo...lina_p_16.html I have been on about 90% of these roads at least once. My group and I are 20 to 30k a year riders. We are always up there for day rides.. 4 to 6 hundred mile days are normal for us during the summer months. Anything near the VA, TN, NC borders is good riding is the sweet stuff. GA and SC and KY are good too. The image below shows what the map looks like opened. All rides are color coded and all dealerships are noted too. A few words of advice : Watch out for dub yella crossers. Some of these roads are extremely tight Be ready for crap in the road ... animals; dead and alive, gravel, big chunks of rock. Use the little boys room when you can .. obviously you can pull over to the side of the road .. some of these roads are VERY rural. One of you carrying a spot in case of trouble wouldnt hurt. Cell service isnt always available .. again depending on where you are. FInally .. if you need gas ... dont wait for the next one. Again .. there may not be one in close proximity depending where you are. ... Safe trip .. keep the shiney side up ! https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.hdf...ad7f54b095.jpg |
PS .. alot of the map is truncated in the graphic. I can see if I can get it all with my cell phone and forward it .. dont think so, though
|
I'd suggest Mt. Mitchell (highest peak of Appalachian) on Blue Ridge Parkway and Wheels Through Time museum in Maggie Valley is a must see!
|
You guys are making me homesick.

Personally I hate the dragon. Many many better roads to ride in that area. Cherohala is a much better ride.

agree
It's a do once kind of thing ... big deal
what's so great about off camber turns, other bikes crossing the yellow, vehicles travelling the road that shouldn't be there (manly trucks) etc etc Ride it... get your shirt .. say goodbye. Very many better roads .. |
Yeah we’re more excited about he trip in general and seeing other roads than just the tail. Got the map. Pretty awesome. |
