AZ or NM in October

Wondering if the weather will be okay and any other hfelpful info.
AZ trip goes to Colorado Springs over Butterfly Pass and then to Durango and the Million Dollar Highway to Muley Point and Moki Dugway either thru Mesa Verde or farther north thru Delores CO. Then thru lower UT and the NPs there and to the North and South rims thru Winslow and Petrified Forest down the Coronado Trail, Billy the Kid scenic byway to Big Bend NP and the twisted sisters to home via Rte 90 olong the coast or I10.
NM trip goes to Colorado Springs over Butterfly Pass and then to Durango and the Million Dollar Highway to Muley Point and Moki Dugway, then Chama NM, Santa Fe and Albuquerque, to Billy the Kid scenic byway, Geronimo Trail, Mountain Spirits Scenic Byway, Coronado Trail, then home.

You could get snow after October 1st on the higher elevations.

New Mexico should be really nice, chilly in the morning, sunny during the day. Colorado is better in September. Personally I'd go the southern route. I'd bypass El Paso and wouldn't go anywhere near Dallas. I'd try to pop out somewhere near Austin, cut across hill country. Cross the 20, make my way into New Mexico whatever way seems attractive, 285 isn't horrible. Go from there.

Not a whole lot going on services-wise in West Texas after Fort Stockton, I wouldn't be eager to make that run at night.

Roswell - Carrizozo is a nice ride. The loop around the Gila mountains should be excellent. The "Wild Hogs" tours through Jemez and Madrid will be nice. Take the high road to Taos, if you're routing through Penasco that's the right way. Taos, Santa Fe, Durango are all gorgeous towns. Espanola is not.

If you can do the Turquoise Trail on a Sunday, you'll be in biker heaven. There's a bunch of gearheads that get together for coffee in Cedar Crest, look for the bikes. It's like going to a museum, impeccably restored antique bikes. BSA's, BMW's. Cafe-ed out Honda multi's. Old Italian marques you've never heard of. Nice guys. A run to the top of Sandia Mountain is definitely worth the time, and you can hone your downhill-decreasing-radius-hairpin technique. Then on to Madrid, which is totally a biker town. Stop off at the Mine Shaft for lunch. From there, a nice ride to Santa Fe. Might consider springing for a room at La Fonda. Get there during the daytime, check out the Native artwork on the sidewalk outside the Palace of Governors, talk to the artists. Anasazi is a great restaurant, Coyote Cafe is also pretty cool. It'll be pretty much the best day ever.

New Mexico is sweet and beautiful and quirky and kinda dumb, like some girlfriend you shouldn'ta broke up with. In reality it wouldn't have worked out but ya kinda miss it, ya know? And for whatever reason you find yourself thinking about it all the time. When you get home you'll be at Denny's demanding green chilli on your eggs and they will look at you like you lost your mind and you'll find yourself missing it too. It gets under your skin like that. Great time of year for that ride.

The AZ weather in October, where you’re wanting to ride could change drastically in short order. Alpine can have lows below freezing and highs in the 60s. About 2 hours south in Clifton/Morenci, the weather could be much warmer (80s).

Sounds like a killer time, I love NM, need to be there eventually. What mapping program is that you're using?

You could experience snow in the Rockies in October. Snow is not very likely in AZ, but higher elevations like Flagstaff or Alpine could be quite cold. The desert valleys (Phoenix/Tucson) would be very good riding weather.

Trust me - riding through Colorado that time of year can be iffy. Stay to the south, if possible!

You can see a daily temperature swing of 40 to 50 degrees in New Mexico.
I'd bet the same holds true in AZ and CO.
Be prepared for anything.

FWIW, it snowed up on the Mogollan Rim in AZ last weekend. It's that time of year already.

What mapping software/application is that? I personally haven't had the pleasure of planning a nice trip like that just yet, and only know of Roadtrippers application to build routes like that. I have a Sena 20S now, so this is something I want to get more acquainted with ASAP!
