Default First Saddle sore 1000

Going to attempt my first Saddle sore 1000 either Nov. 23rd or 24th. Going to be riding a 02' wide glide with a windshield and highway pegs. Leaving from Asheboro NC and headed down I-95 to Daytona and back. 1,048 miles is what Google maps is showing. Looking to leave around 4 am or 5 am. I am hoping I-95 won't have much traffic after Thanksgiving. How strict is the IBA on speeding? I normally run 15-20 over when on the highway and do not want to get disqualified. Planning on 8 stops for gas and 2 stops for meals. The stops and meals I have planned to take up a total of 3 hours. 15 min each gas and 30 min for meals. I will most likely not take that long but want to have it built in. Any other tips would be appreciated.

Watch yourself in South Georgia. The last 75 mi. or so of I-95 are some kind of "enhanced enforcement zone". Lottsa law enforcement, state and county in the medians.
Once you get into Florida...15 over will just about allow you to keep up.

They only know total time and distance. They don't know how long your stops are. I think they just make sure you met the goal and don't post times anymore to keep it from being a speed contest.

Make sure you take the bypass at Jacksonville, otherwise you are going to get stuck in traffic. Good luck.

The weeks before, I'd say take a 400 mile day, then a 600 mile day, then an 800 mile day. By then, you'll know what works and what doesn't.

I'd suggest an airhawk pad.
Also, extra fuel.
Good luck, and ride safe.

Like a couple others mentioned....south Georgia; watch for cops!!
Also.....you better take 295 bypass in Jacksonville. If not....it won't be a good day for ya!!!

Good luck

The only thing that the IBA does is not publish the total miles ridden if they could not have been done by averaging the speed limit, so if you were to ride 1900 miles in 24 hours they would say more that 1800 miles. Obviously not an issue if you are doing a SS1K. Also, they would not certify if it was known the speed limit would not allow the ride to be done. For example, you cannot get a SS1K for doing the Blue Ridge Parkway as the speed limit is 35 mph on most of it.

Of course, if speeding and you get pulled over you could loose all the time you gained and then some, so choose wisely on how fast you ride.

As for traffic, Thanksgiving is one of the most heavily traveled holidays so there may be more traffic than you expect. There is only one way to find out

Have fun and good luck

PS - There really is no need to go excessively fast doing a SS1K. You are better off simply being efficient during your fuel stops

We just did this (Greensboro - Port Orange) and yes sir they are out in force in GA! Also, Jacksonville is fine straight through (I-95) so long as it is not rush hour; we cruised through around 3:00 P.M. Enjoy the ride.

Not to be nosy but what is your age. Two weeks ago I left Maryland at 5:00am, 44 degrees, for Florida on my first long distance ride thinking I might get the SS1k. Cold weather was not too bad, I am 71 years old and always get under 24hrs to south Florida by car. had a mechanical issue so check your maps so you know which Harley dealers are right off I95. ie, exit 97 in NC and Black Jack HD in Florence, SC.
I got as far as Brunswick GA, 700 miles at 7:00pm. Having to stop at Harley meant getting in too late for my final destination. For me theres always the trip back up north to try again.

You might consider a 2-3 day trip leaving on Friday. Go thru Atlanta, down 75 to Naples. Across Tamiami trail and back up north via 95. After the 1k you can relax and enjoy the warm Florida weather for a short while.
