I don't remember the route numbers that I took but on my return trip from Alaska in 2000, but the ferry took me to Bellingham, WA.
and from there I rode south past Mt Rainer and then to Mt. St. Helens. I then headed east along the Columbia River to Rt(s) 197 and 97 south to Crater Lake in Oregon.

From Crater Lake I went back north on Rt 97 to Bend and then took Rt 20 into Idaho and eventually to Boise to meet up with a friend for the ride to Sturgis, S.D.

All of the northwest (from what I've seen) is beautiful riding country, just make sure that you have your leathers and rain gear.

 

Sorry couldn’t help it, but very important to bring your rain gear...

 

If you are near the Oregon/Washington border Hwy 30 from Astoria to Hood River is a great alternative to I-84. Especially the Rowena Loops.
