I went through Utah and Colorado last October and it was a bit cold and a bit a snow in some areas, though the roads where clear. I was out there after labor day in September of 2017 too and it was fine but I was mostly just passing through and that was just for a couple days. One of the videos in my signature, is on or right after Memorial day 2017 and you see a ton of snow on Pike's Peak. On that trip, I experienced rain, sleet, snow, and pea sized hail.
This pic was taken on Sep 9th 2017 somewhere along Pike's Peak. It was still open but Mt. Evans was closed.
This was later that day about 10 miles from Estes Park at my campsite.

This route cannot be stressed enough! You will enjoy nearly everything Colorado has to offer in one great days ride. Just be sure to fill up before leaving Fort Collins as after you get on Poudre Canyon rd there is no suitable fuel available until arriving in Walden. 115 miles give or take. From Walden to Grand Lake is a bit boring but the rest is amazing.
