Tonopah it is. Try to make Lee Vining or Bridgeport today, We’ll see. My pace usually about that of a herd of turtles. I like to stop and look around a little. Thanks.

We took Highway 6 from Ely to Tonapah. It is even more remote and unpopulated than Highway 50. Wide open, empty and huge. It is beautiful the whole way. I’m fascinated by the raw untouched vastness of the Nevada High desert. Every time I come out here that fascination is rekindled. It seems like a place where a strong young man with ambition, a mule and forty acres could carve something out and make something of it. Then again you come across abandoned dwellings and sometime small towns that have been left there like forgotten dreams so maybe it’s just a pipe dream. Some though, seem to thrive out there as evidence of the huge ranches and cattle operations. Those were carved out of the desert be once young and ambitious men and woman I’m sure.
From filling station in Ely to filling station in Tonapah we traveled 180 miles. There is no gas in between. Tonapah is an old silver mining town. The Main St. strip is okay but a block or two in there is a high percentage of dilapidated buildings and some some which look like they are still inhabited while damn near falling down. It looks pretty rough. But then right across the street from where we gassed up was a small rest stop with no less than eight Tesla charging stations. Weird.
More forgotten dreams near Lee Vining, California....
One of my favorite restaurants in the whole world is Nicely’s in Lee Vining, California. Old school American cafe with good food at reasonable prices.
Mono Lake, looking back towards Lee Vining.
We traveled 352 miles today and are now holed up in a motel in Bridgeport, California. This the view.
