We do a big trip every year and i spend a lot of time pre planning. If you have a larger group - 4 or more, you have to keep the miles down. If you are alone, or with just a buddy, you can really rack on the miles.
As a rule, I try to keep the days below 300 at a maximum - closer to 200 really allows you to take your time and do more than a Clark Grizwald nod at the Grand Canyon. A lot is going to depend on your group and what you are trying to do that day. As you can see from my plan, these are just guidelines. The route and schedule impact your planning as well.
Any specific recommendations as to the sights going thru Durango or Ouray? Getting laid off on Monday. Considering a nice long ride from Phoenix to Colorado Springs to see my in-laws & clear my head. We'd normally go thru Albuquerque to save time but that's not a factor anymore.
