Talking Touring Utah 2019

With a couple of days off I decided to explore Utah on my Electra Glide.

Here is a GPS map of my route: https://spotwalla.com/tripViewer.php...=0&showAll=yes

I left my home in Durango Colorado and headed southwest. In the extreme southwest corner of Colorado is the Sleeping Ute Mountain. It is called that because it looks like a person sleeping on his back. Ute is a tribe of Native Americans that live in Colorado and Utah (actually Utah is named after the Utes). This mountain is said to look like a man on his back with his arms folded on his chest. I think it looks more like a woman. I didn't take a picture back far enough to show the resemblance of a sleeping person.

There is a road going north of the Sleeping Ute Mountain. I always thought this was a dirt road or maybe even a four wheel drive road. I recently found out it is paved so I decided to take it.

I crossed into Utah.

I passed by a lot of sandstone near Bluff UT.

I went into the shade of Comb Ridge in southern Utah

Monument Valley is an awesome place with rock buttes. I've been there several times but today I turned north onto Highway 261 just before reaching Monument Valley.

This is Valley of the Gods and this next picture is Bell Butte.

Valley of the Gods is a cool destination but the main reason I turned onto Highway 261 was because I have heard a lot about the Moki Dugway and I wanted to go see it.

To be continued ...

So now I'm in far southern Utah and I turn north. Looking at this next picture you can see the road I'm on go into that cliff. The road climbs the cliff. This is the Moki Dugway.

What is the Moki Dugway you ask? It's the road that goes up the cliff of the mesa. Moki means Pueblo, referring to the ancient Indians that have lived in the four corners area for thousands of years. Dugway refers to the road dug into the cliff.

What I find odd is Highway 261 is paved except for the few miles that the Moki Dugway climbs the mesa.

Down below you can see the paved road I was on earlier.

Here's a view of the Moki Dugway winding its way up the mesa.

nice shots. Was there last summer and didn't do Moki Dugway. Kind of kicked myself later.

I did the Moki. Great ride. If it was paved the whole way, it would not be exciting as it is.
